2018 AFL Sydney season launched at AFLX

The 2018 AFL Sydney season was launched over the weekend at the inaugural AFLX tournament at Allianz Stadium.

Clubs from across the league joined AFL Sydney in celebrating the merging of the AFL Sydney and AFL Sydney Juniors competitions as one from 2018 and beyond. Also coming under the AFL Sydney banner will be the Sydney based Independent Schools and AFL Sydney Masters competitions.

AFL Sydney, Australia’s largest Australian Football league, also launched the recommendations from the Future Directions of AFL Sydney project, including the five-year strategic plan for the AFL competition in Sydney at the event.

Hosted by the Seven Network’s Kylie Gillies and Triple M’s Liam Flanagan, the event also saw the North Shore Bombers and Sydney University square-off on the Allianz Stadium turf in a match of the new AFLX format as a curtain-raiser to the main event.

Community Football Manager – Sydney, Lauren Bunting thanked everyone involved in getting the local competition to the point it has for 2018.

“Today is an opportunity for the AFL Sydney community to come together ahead of what will be a historic season for our competitions,” said Bunting.

“Last year, the Future Directions of AFL Sydney Project was commissioned, with the aim of developing a unified long-term vision and strategic objectives for AFL Sydney.

“To bring the project to life, a consultation process occurred where the Sydney football community was given the opportunity to provide feedback in line with the scope of the project.

“Thank you to everyone in this room who provided invaluable input throughout this process.”
