AFL Sydney Rising Star nominees – Round 15

Men’s Round 15 Rising Star nominee

Name: Wesley Greenaway

Nickname: Wes, Sniper

AFL Sydney Club: Sydney University

Position: Halfback

Junior Club: Newtown

Favourite activity to do outside of football: Hang out with friends and listen to Playboi Carti’s one verse in Earthquake.

What is one thing that we don’t know about this Rising Star that they are well known for around the club? Nicknamed after the great Wesley Snipes

What role do they play for the club both on and off the field? Rebounding half back on the field and just a solid citizen off the field

The night before the game what will they most likely be doing? At home or at my mates house watching the footy

Do they have any pre-game superstitions? Not really, just like to eat toast pre-game and find something comfortable to wear prior to the game

Reason for nomination this round:

“Named in the best versus Wests after a great performance.”

Coach quote on Performance:

“Wes has played four Premier Division games this year. A couple of small injuries and sharing his time in an undefeated Colts team have reduced his opportunities at the top level. In the last two matches he has shown the league that he belongs in Premier Division with strong performances culminating in Wes being named among the best on ground against Wests. A versatile player Wes has fitted in down back and has shown his skill and determination while playing on the opposition resting mids. He was never headed last week and showed great skill and work rate while the team exited the back line. His kicking efficiency was extremely high and his contested marking make him an extremely great asset to our backline. Coupling this he made some very strong tackles at crucial times that saw him recognised by peers in the post-match player’s player voting. As one ex NEAFL player commented post game, “We really need to keep this kid in the side, he fits in fantastically.”

Women’s Round 15 Rising Star nominee

Name: Tayliya Kennedy

Nickname: T

AFL Sydney Club: Inner West Magpies

Position: T is a little utility player and can play all over. We have put her on the wing, back line and forwards. She’s strong all over the field.

Junior Club: Greystanes Goannas

Favourite activity to do outside of football: Sing and play the guitar/ukulele

What is one thing that we don’t know about this Rising Star that they are well known for around the club? T is a bit of a low-key superstar and has recently released her own music single called ‘Hold On’

What role do they play for the club both on and off the field? T one of our young kids, she’s always bubbly and works hard at training and on game day. She’s a great role model for other young girls playing footy and for our club.

The night before the game what will they most likely be doing? Eating a carb loaded dinner and watching the footy

Do they have any pre-game superstitions?  Wash my hair and shave my legs even though I know I’m going to get dirty!

Reason for nomination this round:

“T showed great skill and development in the Sydney Uni game over the weekend and played an important roll to help her team shut down the Uni attack and provide opportunities to counterattack. She is improving her footy skills every week and building on her confidence.”

Coach quote on Performance:

“Her defensive pressure on the wing throughout the game helped provide turnover opportunities against Sydney Uni which helped us with counterattack opportunities throughout the game. With her ability to help our defence when under pressure and the fitness to be able to retain her position structurally once the ball was cleared, her future in Sydney AFL and beyond is very bright.” – Christien Specha, Inner West Women’s Coach
