Boy, Oh Boy Wowee of the Week – Round Five

ROUND FIVE WINNER

UNSW Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs volunteer, Eddy Scales for his “herculean” effort behind the BBQ at Henson Park in Round 5.

For the second time this year, 77 year old Eddy donned the apron for a full 12 hours, flipping burgers and turning snags without a break. The NEAFL match between the Sydney Swans and Sydney Uni brought in a large number of Swans AFL players and coaching staff to observe the match. Rumour has it, Eddy’s mouthwatering medium rare burgers were the real reason the guys were there after celebrating their second win of the season the night before.

Eddy’s been a long time volunteer for the Bulldogs. His continued tireless contributions to the club, all with a smile on his face are an inspiration to all his fellow club members.

Nomination: Erle Lindsay, UNSW Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

St George don the pink

The St George Dragons celebrated their ladies day this weekend and in the process raised awareness and money for breast cancer. Every St George team around the grounds wore pink socks as part of the McGrath Foundation’s “Pull on your Socks” campaign. Players purchased a pair of socks for $10 with every dollar going to the McGrath Foundation to help support families with breast cancer.

Nomination: Lachy Ryan, St George Dragons.

North Shore’s Ladies Day

The North Shore Bombers also celebrated their Ladies Day in Round 5, which drew record crowds to their brand new home at Gore Hill Oval. In North Shore’s own words, ‘the day was put on to celebrate the Ladies who support us, volunteer for us, our mother’s, our wives, our sister’s our daughters, our friends and partners, past and present, and the contribution they make to our club and as individuals’.

The day was also used as a fundraiser for Mary’s House, a shelter in North Sydney which supports women and their children who need help because of domestic violence.

Many in attendance on the day wore a splash of pink and players wore pink arm bands during play. There was also a special line-up of guys notoriously known as ‘the Cheese Graters’ serving up cakes, Rosé , Pink Champagne and pampering all the ladies in attendance. By all accounts it was another successful Ladies Day for the North Shore Bombers.

Nomination: Michele Roseby, North Shore Bombers
