Boy, Oh Boy Wowee of the Week – Round Ten

ROUND TEN WINNER

The Newtown Breakaways Pride Round celebrations that featured a rainbow centre circle, rainbow socks and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese behind the BBQ.

On Saturday June 22, the Breakaways celebrated Pride Round at their home ground of Mahoney Oval in Marrickville. There were some high profile spectators in attendance: Leader of the Opposition and Federal Member for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese and Councillor Anna York from Inner-West Council (representing the Mayor). Albo could be seen flipping snags behind the BBQ, giving coaching tips in the sheds and getting photos with the teams.

This support is testament to the Breakaways’ standing within the local community as a club that champions diversity and inclusiveness. Breakaways Club President Ingrid McLanders said the club’s annual celebration of Pride is a treasured tradition.

“The Breakaways have a rich history as an independent women’s AFL club in Sydney. Our strength comes from our diversity. The same diversity that makes the Inner West community so special,” McLanders said.

Pride month is celebrated around the world. This kind of support shows how far we’ve come 50 years on from the Stonewall Riots.

The Breakaways are proud to wear rainbow with their usual red and white.

Nomination: Peter Tregilgas, Newtown Breakaways FC
