Women’s Premier Division Match of the Round Review – Manly Warringah Wolves vs. Southern Power

Written By Lucas Holmes

Recap

Both sides came into Sir Doug Nicholls Round entrenched in the top five. Manly Warringah Wolves defeated Macquarie University by 32 points and Southern Power defeated UTS by 25 points in Round 7.

Catherine Stanton’s absence for the Power proved to be a big loss. While Southern Power did have regular entries into their forward half, they were unable to keep it in for sustained periods. The Wolves’ on-ball brigade of Goodsir and Steane were the driving force behind their eventual victory. Steane’s run and carry on the outside of the contest was a feature.

First quarter

An act of ill-discipline from Manly Warringah led to the first goal of the game. Southern Power received a 50-metre penalty as the ball wasn’t given back on the full and Jemima Wrigley kicked the first major from the top of the goal square.

The Wolves had a chance minutes later. Lisa Steane drove the ball deep inside the forward 50 where Andrea Roditos ran into an open goal square but couldn’t get a boot to ball.

After some impressive acts of forward pressure that led to repeat forward 50 entries, Manly Warringah broke through. Emily Goodsir was awarded a free kick at centre half-forward, a low pass found Jessica Doyle on the lead and made no mistake from the set shot.

Goals to Hannah Woolf and Kaitlyn Manning rounded out the first quarter for the Wolves.

Quarter time: Manly Warringah Wolves 3.0.18 Southern Power 1.0.6.

Second quarter

It didn’t take long for Manly Warringah to create a chance in the second quarter. Steane found some space on the centre wing and sent the Wolves inside their forward 50, a short kick from Joy Leaper found Goodsir who hit the post from 30 metres out.

From the resulting kick-out, Amee Dawson made a chase down tackle and then found Holly Graham who marked on the second attempt. An infraction on the mark allowed Graham to convert from point-blank range for the Wolves’ first of the quarter.

After some opportunities inside the Power’s forward 50, Manning was able to add her second for the evening. After receiving a free kick for a hold, Manning’s set shot from 40 metres out just cleared the players on the line giving Manly Warringah a 25-point lead.

Goodsir kicked her first goal late in the quarter pushing the lead out to an even five goals at the main break.

Half time: Manly Warringah Wolves 6.1.37 Southern Power 1.1.7.

Third quarter

It took a little over a minute for the Wolves to add to their half time score. Dawson cleared from the centre wing, a short handball from Goodsir found Isabella Rudolph in stride. Rudolph’s kick made it to the goal line where Graham made a strong tackle that allowed Doyle to kick an easy goal.

This would ultimately be the only major of the third quarter.

Three quarter time Manly Warringah Wolves 7.3.45 Southern Power 1.2.8.

Fourth quarter

Roditis had the first chance in the final quarter. Ashleigh Carter sent the ball inside the forward 50 from the centre circle. With the assistance of the breeze at Weldon Oval, the ball went over the back of the contest where Roditis roved but couldn’t quite finish as the open goal beckoned.

Carter was on hand again to assist in the first goal of the final term. After collecting a sweeping handball from Steane, Carter sent the ball to the hotspot. Goodsir roved the contest and kicked the goal from 15 metres out.

Graham kicked her second just past the midway point of the quarter. A ball up at centre half-forward was roved once again by Goodsir, Graham marked uncontested in the forward pocket. Graham converted from a tight angle to extend the Wolves lead.

A late goal to Pheobe Carter put the icing on the cake for Manly Warringah, moving them into outright second on the ladder.

Full-time: Manly Warringah Wolves 10.6.66 Southern Power 1.2.8.

For Manly Warringah, Goodsir and Steane dominated around the stoppages whilst Graham was important in the forward line. From a Southern Power perspective, Sarah Heptinstall was impressive in contested situations and Brodee Mowbray’s hands were particularly clean considering the blustery conditions.
