Pocket Profile- Dale Widders (Volunteer, St. George Dragons)

Get to know St. George Volunteer, Dale Widders!

Name: Dale Widders
AFL Sydney Club: St George
What is your role around the club?
I am the Team manager for the St George Premier Division team and I am one of the Clubs Vice Presidents, responsible for Membership Services and Social Media
How did you become involved at the club?
I was heavily involved in the Penshurst Junior Club where my son played, and with St George being the Senior Club for footy in the South of Sydney, I just naturally progressed into senior footy with the Dragons.
How long have you been involved with the club?
I’ve now been with St George for four years, starting out as Team Manager for the U19’s in 2018.
What drives you most to volunteer at your local AFL Sydney club?
Like all officials at St George I have a great love of the game and a keen desire to see the game succeed in Sydney.  The St George Club has a long, strong footy history and it is enormously rewarding to work alongside likeminded people who care about AFL and want to enrich the game at community level with the terrific young men and women that play at our club.
Most memorable moment at the club?
In 2019 St George re-introduced Women’s footy with a team, in Division Three. Consisting of a really diverse group of women, with wildly different ages and backgrounds, and many of whom had never played AFL, this group just qualified for finals, and then swept all before them to win the Grand Final.  In a fabulous weekend for the Club, our Reserve Grade team, containing a group of bonafide Club legends also won the premiership.
What are you missing most about the footy club during lockdown?
The buzz created every week when genuine footy people combine to make our club the best it can be on and off the field.
What TV show is getting you through lockdown?
Loving the DIY shows – especially Escape to the Chateau.  So much spare time on weekends now I could renovate a chateau in France single handed!
Where is the first place you would visit once travel restrictions lift?
Bunnings and The Kogarah Clubhouse for a Schnitzel ………
Who is your tip to win the 2021 AFL Premiership and Brownlow medal?
Clayton Oliver will win the Brownlow the week before the Swans take the Premiership
Usual coffee order?
Flat White with one sugar for me.
Shout out to someone at the club that always lends you a hand (player, coach etc)
Could name several, but Mick Travers, a former St George champion of the 80’s and current Senior Assistant Coach, is a genuine dynamo when it comes to doing stuff around the club that makes my life easier.  He is also a great bloke to share a post match drink with.
