Get to know East Coast Eagles Women’s Premier Division Player, Sarah Ford!

Name: Sarah Ford
Nickname: Fordy
AFL Sydney Club: East Coast Eagles
Junior Club: n/a
Position/s: Midfield
Playing Number: 5
Usual Grade: Premier division
First season of AFL Sydney footy: 2017
Why did you start playing footy?
I grew up watching footy and always wanted to play, like my brothers, but the pathways were not there. I was running water for my brother’s team one day when the club told me they would be entering a women’s team the next year and I told them I’d be part of the team on the spot.
What is your most memorable AFL Sydney moment?
The 2019 Grand Final. We may not have got the W on the day but I could not have been prouder of watching the girls get to that that point in such a short amount of time.
What is the best part about playing at your current club?
The amount of fun that the girls have on (and off) the field. The girls always know how to pick each other up and it makes you look forward to training/games every week.
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or routines?
I like to get strapped last – despite what people might think, it’s not a superstition just happened by chance after my first couple of games with East Coast and I’ve generally kept with it.
What is the best advice you have received as a player and from who?
As I gained more confidence in my skills I started worrying about hitting targets whilst I was still picking the ball up. At that time my Dad gave me a piece of advice that I take with me to every game and training session – “Watch the ball all the way into your hands and stop trying to dispose of it before this has happened cleanly.”
Who has the best kick at the club?
Jordy Jolliffe
What is one AFL rule you would change and why?
Not sure if I want it to be a permanent rule change but would be interested to see how play on after the footy hits the post would work out. It has the potential to create a bit of mayhem.
What are you missing most about footy during lockdown?
Training with a team!
Interests outside of football?
Getting outdoors with family & friends
Which teammate is most likely to:
Turn up late Caiti Rogers
Be on the massage table Georgie Fowler
Forget their boots Maddy Ferguson

Who is your tip to win the 2021 AFL Premiership & Brownlow Medal?
Ollie Wines for sure
Who would you like to see as the Pre-Game entertainment for the 2021 AFL Grand Final?
What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
 A house
First place you want to visit after travel restrictions lift?
Within Australia to Victoria (to see my family) and overseas to Canada (to see my best friend)
What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
Probably still a house
What is the one superpower you wish you had and why?
Teleportation to save time and money on travel
Apple Music or Spotify?
Controversial but Apple Music
Pineapple on Pizza. Yes/ No?
I would prefer no but it doesn’t actually phase me too much.
Usual coffee order?
I don’t drink coffee…
What is this player know for at your club?
Sarah is the Co-Captain and a passionate club person who leads from the front.  She is well known for her commitment to her preparation prior to training and on game day.  She is a tough midfielder who finds plenty of the footy.

Sarah has been with the Eagals since its inception. Her commitment to building the women’s teams into the competitive and committed group that they have become has been exceptional.

Any additional comments about the player
Despite missing the majority of the 2021 season with an ankle injury, Sarah was still just as influential at training and game day.
