Breakaways Pre-Season Women’s AFLX Challenge Returning in March 2021
AFL Sydney are excited to announce that the Newtown Breakaways Pre-Season Women’s AFLX Challenge Carnival will be back in 2021.
After back to back successful carnivals, the Newtown Breakaways will be hosting the third carnival at the recently renovated Mahoney Oval in Marrickville, on Sunday the 21st of March.
The event continues to grow year on year and the Breakaways are encouraging buy-in from all Women’s teams in the city and beyond to help make this the biggest carnival yet.
The Challenge was developed in response to a need for clubs to secure competitive pre-season trial games, helping clubs test and promote players in a game environment that is beyond the their internal training program.
Games are played on rectangular fields in AFLX format, with each team guaranteed at least three games across the program.
The AFLX format has been adopted to suit the smaller field dimensions, however the rules have been modified to emulate a traditional game environment.
Teams will be split into two divisions and will compete for a spot in the finals during the qualifying rounds.
The teams with the best records at the end of the qualifying rounds then go on to play in the finals where there’ll be Championship Shields and cash prizes up for grabs.
The Breakaways have designed the Challenge event as a football carnival which provides a picnic atmosphere to build community and comradery among clubs while still engaging in competitive football.
Teams are encouraged to bring a marquee, a picnic, dress up, get to know each other and most of all, enjoy the day and all the festivities that come with it.
The Challenge is open to all Women’s AFL Community Clubs whether from Greater Sydney or the Regions and supports all levels of competition from Premier to Division Three.
