Pocket Profile- Christian Loone (Player, North Shore)

Get to know Men’s Premier Division Ruck and Half Forward, Christian Loone!

Name: Christian Loone
Nickname: Loones
AFL Sydney Club: North Shore Bombers
Junior Club: Pittwater Tigers
Position/s: Ruckman, Half-back
Playing Number: 2
Usual Grade: Men’s Premier Division
First season of AFL Sydney footy: 2017
Why did you start playing footy?
My fathers side of the family are from Tasmania, with my uncle and grandfather having played for Carlton’s reserves side. So when I was old enough, my father signed me up to my local club.
What is your most memorable AFL Sydney moment?
Pretty hard to say but beating Sydney University in the last game of the regular season in 2020 was pretty good. Haven’t had any tastes of victory in the finals for Bombers, so looking forward to making some special memories there in the future.
What is the best part about playing at your current club?
Definitely the comradery at the club. North Shore Bombers across all grades is a close knit community, and I love staying back after my game to watch the Women’s or Under 19’s play.
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or routines?
Left sock on before the right sock
What is the best advice you have received as a player and from who?
I am fortunate to have received a lot of great advice in my time at North Shore, as there are a lot of past and present players who have imparted some powerful insight into how I can improve my game. However I think the most poignant advice I ever got was from my grandfather, who told me just before I ran out onto the field before a game, “You aren’t playing for yourself out there, you’re playing for that guernsey, and all the people who have worn it before you”.
Who has the best kick at the club?
I reckon it has to be my skipper Jake Veale, hits most people lace out nine times out of ten.
What is one AFL rule you would change and why?
I wish the AFL would bring back the third man up in the ruck. Was always pretty exciting being able to run and jump into the ruck pack around the game.
What are you missing most about footy during lockdown?
I miss interacting with my mates, the early morning gym sessions or training throughout the week, you unfortunately cannot replicate being in such a positive and competitive environment.
Interests outside of football?
I am a member of my local surf club, so am at the beach most days throughout the summer. I also love reading and watching documentaries.
Which teammate is most likely to:
Turn up late Matt Wilson
Be on the massage table Jake Veale
Forget their boots Charlie Silvester
Suck up to the coach Matthew Buskariol
Appear on the next season of Australian Survivor Tom Meacham
Who is your tip to win the 2021 AFL Premiership & Brownlow Medal?
I’ve gotta go the Swannies to win the flag, they could be pretty good smokies if they get it right on the day. Bontompelli is winning the Brownlow for 2021, it’s hardly a question at this state.
Who would you like to see as the Pre-Game entertainment for the 2021 AFL Grand Final?
I love watching local talent so Tame Impala would be amazing. I’ve got tickets to his upcoming show in Sydney
What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
North Shore permanent club rooms
First place you want to visit after travel restrictions lift?
New Zealand
What is the one superpower you wish you had and why?
The ability to duplicate myself. Then I would be able to send one version of myself to work while I could go surf at the beach
Apple Music or Spotify?
Spotify
Pineapple on Pizza. Yes/ No?
Yes, let the people eat what they want to eat!
Usual coffee order?
Small Latte
What is this player know for at your club?
Loones is known for being a competitive beast. Despite not being the tallest bloke in our midfield, let alone as tall as the opposing ruckman, you’ll rarely see him lose a tap, or any one on one around the ground.
Any additional comments about the player
A rare combination of size, fitness and grit.
