Written by Sam McLaughlin
AFL Sydney, AFL Canberra, AFL South Coast and AFL Hunter Central Coast have named the coaches and athletes selected to represent the leagues’ best at the highly anticipated NSW/ACT Men’s and Women’s Senior Representative games on Saturday 10 May.
The handpicked squad lists for the Representative games have been identified from across the state and territory and showcase the next generation of burgeoning footy talent on the pathway to the elite level.
The intense match-ups between AFL South Coast and AFL Hunter Central Coast will open the day of Representative footy at Blacktown International Sports Park, before AFL Sydney and AFL Canberra reignite their rivalry to close the competition series.
Head of AFL NSW/ACT Andrew Varasdi said: “The NSW/ACT Men’s and Women’s Representative games play a critical role in shaping the future of footy.
“The selected athletes are a cohort representing the state and territory’s best and have showcased immense potential as they follow the pathway to participation at higher levels.
“We are set for an amazing series of Representative footy featuring many of our most talented players.”
The squad lists for the Men’s and Women’s Representative games features over 220 players from clubs across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
GWS Giants VFL player Hugo Birks (UNSW-ES Bulldogs) highlights AFL Sydney’s Men’s squad as the league’s current leading goal kicker this season, while Sophie Kavanagh (North Shore Bombers) forms part of AFL Sydney’s Women’s list, having been listed with North Melbourne’s AFLW side in 2024 and currently leading the disposal count across AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division competition.
After an impressive summer series, Jesse Dunstall (Ainslie Tricolours) – nephew of AFL Hall of Fame legend Jason Dunstall – remains with the AFL Canberra Men’s squad, while 2023 AFL Canberra Bainrot Medallist Jayde Hamilton will be an addition to AFL Canberra’s Women’s representative team in 2025.
For their match-up against AFL Hunter Central Coast, the AFL South Coast Men’s side boasts 2024 Tunbridge Medallist Jacob May (Figtree Kangaroos) alongside Alicia Anderson (Figtree Saints) in the Women’s squad who was also awarded Best on Ground during last year’s Representative game.
The AFL Sydney and AFL Canberra match-ups also serve as a prime opportunity for players to perform as coaches and selectors for both squads determine their final team for the upcoming representative showcase against AFL Tasmania at North Hobart Oval on Saturday, 19 July.
A short documentary following the 2024 NSW/ACT Senior Representative squad during last year’s representative match against Tasmania is streaming on AFL On Demand, which can be viewed here.
Umpires from Sydney, Canberra, Hunter Central Coast and the South Coast will officiate games during the series.
