Meet our Round Six Women’s Rising Star Nominee, Lucy Smith, Sydney University
Player Profile:
Name: Lucy Smith.
Nickname: Chilla.
AFL Sydney Club: Sydney Uni.
Position: Defender.
Junior Club: Flemington Junior Football Club.
Favourite activity to do outside of football?
A coffee run with friends.
What is one thing that we don’t know about this Rising Star that they are well known for around the club?
Lucy quietly goes about her work. As she is from out of Sydney, she was not able to attend many sessions in the early pre-season, so she organised to do pre-season with a local club and came back to Uni fit, strong and has just slotted straight in. Even when she went home for mid-term at Easter, she kept up her training locally.
What role do they play for the club both on and off the field?
Lucy has cemented her position as a defender. Whilst she can play wing as well, she has found her natural place in the backs and accepts whatever role we have for her to play.
The night before the game what will they most likely be doing?
Procrastinating doing uni assignments.
Do they have any pre-game superstitions?
Must have eggs for breakfast.
Reason for nomination this round:
Lucy has been building influence and becoming a more consistent performer all season. She had great games in Rounds 5 and 6, where she has excelled as a strong one-on-one player being rarely beaten. For a tall player she shows great agility below her knees as well as being highly competitive in the air, splitting contests if she doesn’t win them.
In the match against Parramatta, Lucy took on feedback to increase her impact more offensively and was able to get in the right place to set up some solid rebound from our half back line.
Coach quote on Performance:
“Lucy has come in as a young gun and earned her spot through the hard work she’s put in during pre-season and the early rounds. She’s held her ground against tough opposition and shown real strength in one-on-one contests. I’m excited to see her continue to grow!” – Mia Conners (Defensive Line Coach)
