RECAP

Lest we forget. The ANZAC Day tradition of the Inner West Magpies hosting the Pennant Hills Demons at Picken Oval continued yesterday in one of the most important rounds on the footy calendar, as we paid our respect to all those who have served and those who continue to serve.

The Demons appeared up for the challenge and at times controlled the football, however, the class of the Magpies shone through with the Inner West team guided by Arron Convery too strong for a determined Demons outfit.

FIRST QUARTER

The Match of the Round commenced with the Demons on the offensive. Laura Donohoe received some nice Madison Hare tap work in the Demons forward 50-meter arc finding Kelsey Hutton who threw the footy on her boot and found Donohoe who marked strong 15 metres. The lead for the Demons was shorted lived with Eleri Morris having two set shots in a matter of minutes, kicking 1.1 and handing the Magpies the lead. The Magpies started to assert their dominance on the match late in the quarter with Lael Kassem winning the football around the contest and Jordan Magee patrolling the half forward line and setting up many a forward 50 entry. At quarter time it was Inner West Magpies 2.3.15 to Pennant Hills Demons 1.0.6.

SECOND QUARTER

The second quarter was all the Magpies with Rebecca Privitelli, whose wayward kicking in the first quarter denied her three goals, kicked goal number one for the day. Despite the clear dominance of Madision Hare in the ruck for the Demons it was the midfield of the Magpies who controlled the clearances with Madeline Convery and Gillian Behan gathering plenty of the football around the ground. The rest of the quarter belonged to Morris who was collected high and awarded a free kick in the Magpies’ forward pocket before gathering herself and finishing brilliantly from a tight angle. Before the quarter was completed, and despite the best effort of Eleanor Rugg (who was one of Pennant Hills’ best), Morris added another two goals and increased her tally for the day to four. The half time score was Inner West Magpies 6.4.40 to Pennant Hill 1.0.6.

THIRD QUARTER

After the long break the Demons coaching team (which includes some of the clubs best coaching minds) moved some magnets and created a much more even contest in the third quarter. Despite the fact the Magpies had patches of dominance they could only manage one goal for the quarter, which came from Morris who swooped on a forward 50 entry from Convery and finished on her right boot from 40 metres out. In this quarter it was clear to see the talent on display from the Magpies with Emily Pease in everything around the ground, while Ella Heads putting on a clinic across the half back line to half forward lines. For the Demons, Kaitlin Quinlan was important along with Eliza Harvey and Tayla Duguid, if not for their efforts the difference would have been greater at three quarter time. The three-quarter time score was Inner West Magpies 7.6.48 to Pennant Hill 1.2.8.

FOURTH QUARTER

As the match entered the final quarter the result was clear, with the Demons defence which has held strong all day begun to buckle under the enormous pressure and talent of the Magpies. When Privitelli marked strongly following another inside 50 from Convery and goaled within a minute of the quarter commencing the Demons where on the back foot. Four further goals to none from the Demons was the outcome with Privitelli who has been held in check for most the game kicked three for the quarter (four for the match) before Pease kicked her first and the match’s final goal. Final score Inner West Magpies 12.7.79 to Pennant Hills Demons 1.2.8.
