Ediriwickrama And Farrugia Take The Top Prizes At Phelan And Mostyn Medal

Pennant Hills Demons Ranga Ediriwickrama and Macquarie University’s Amanda Farrugia have taken out the major Best and Fairest Awards at this year’s AFL Sydney night of nights, the Phelan and Mostyn Medal held last night in Doltone House, Sydney.

The night kicked off with nine inductees being awarded Life Membership of AFL Sydney. Yvette Andrews, Lucy Burgmann, Michaela Ekman, Steph Foster, Meredith Gray, Karen James, Roslyn McMahon-Bostick, Natalie Morgan and Jemma Still were acknowledged and celebrated for their huge contributions to female football in Sydney, in particular, the establishment of the Sydney Women’s Australian Football League, twenty years ago.

Yvette Andrews said that she was delighted that the heritage of the SWAFL was recognised at the Phelan and Mostyn medal.

“The AFL takes its heritage very seriously and it means so much for the efforts of all these women to be recognised with life membership. We started the SWAFL simply out of a love for this game, and it makes me so happy to see the incredible growth of female football today.”

A total of 33 awards were given across the night, the highlight being Farrugia securing her third Mostyn Medal and Pennant Hills Demons gun Ranga Ediriwickrama taking home his first Phelan Medal.

Farrugia, the captain of the GWS GIANTS AFLW team in 2018, said that this award was a great reflection on her AFL Sydney club Macquarie University.

“Getting this award is a bit of a surprise as I’ve been away a bit with the GIANTS playing in VFLW, but I always love coming home and playing for Macquarie Uni in this competition. We have an incredible culture and it’s always a pleasure to represent them.”

Ediriwickrama, a former AFL NSW scholarship holder with the Geelong Cats said that this award wouldn’t have been possible without his team-mates support.

“It’s a huge honour to get this award, and I can’t thank my team-mates enough for the sacrifices that they have made every week to enable me to win this medal. It’s a team game, and this award is just as much for them as me.”

AFL NSW/ACT CEO Sam Graham said the Phelan and Mostyn Medal is a wonderful chance to celebrate the contributions of not just players, but volunteers, umpires, coaches and administrators to AFL in Sydney.

“AFL Sydney is the largest community football league in Australia, and that is thanks to the work of so many people across the year. I’d like to congratulate all winners from across the night and wish all of those competing in Grand Finals this weekend the best of luck.”

The AFL Sydney competition wraps up this weekend at Blacktown International Sportspark, with eight Grand Finals being decided across both Saturday and Sunday.
