AFL Sydney Women’s Representative side secured a dominant 62-point win over Black Diamond AFL Women on Saturday. The representative game at Adelaide St Oval ended 10.12.72 to 1.4.10, in what was a great performance by the travelling side.

A competitive team made up of players from the AFL Sydney Women’s competition took to the ground in perfect conditions, eager to take on their Black Diamond counterparts.

AFL Sydney started strongly, getting on top in the first quarter with some quality contested ball and some long shots at goal. Roxy McGee from the UNSW/ES Stingrays found some space early, taking an uncontested mark and slotting the first goal of the game from 25 metres out.

They kicked three more goals for the quarter and managed to hold Black Diamond scoreless to lead by 27-points at the first break.

Black Diamond increased their pressure in the second quarter and were rewarded with an early goal, but AFL Sydney countered to kick two more goals, and lead by 37 at the half.

Captain Phoebe Monahan was a central figure for the AFL Sydney side, leading in the midfield and putting in a complete performance. She received strong support from fellow standouts Jasmine Smith, Pippy Clegg and Melissa Freckelton.

AFL Sydney managed to keep Black Diamond goalless in the second half, limiting them to four behinds as they picked up the pressure. Laura Russell kicked an early goal in the third quarter, with Sarah Ford kicking true to extend the lead to 49 points half way through the term.

Freckleton capitalised on a ball that found its way over the pack to soccer it through the sticks and help increase the lead 54 at the end of the third quarter.

Laura Holdsworth kicked her second early in the final quarter, and by that stage the result was beyond doubt.

Monahan was named Best on Ground after a performance where she seemed to cover the whole field. The captain led from the front and the final 62-point win was reflective of AFL Sydney’s supremacy on the day.
