The Capper caper comes to Weldon Oval

This weekend sees one of the greatest enigma’s in AFL history turn out for the Manly-Warringah Wolves at Weldon Oval.

Former Sydney Swans and Brisbane Bears star, Warwick ‘The Wiz’ Capper will be the ‘Assistant Coach’ of the Manly-Warringah Division 2 side as they go up against the UNSW Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs.

The prolific forward, known for his long hair and short shorts, kicked 317 goals in a 90-game career for the Sydney Swans in the late 1980’s. This included kicking 103 goals in the 1987 season.

Matt Rawle, Club President of the Wolves is extremely excited to have Capper relaying his experience to the Manly-Warringah players.

“He is going to be ‘trolling’ the sidelines, Assistant Coaching the Division Two side,” Rawle said.

“[He will be] giving the boys pep talks, both pre and mid-game, possibly running water and just getting involved.

“He is claiming after his words of wisdom…[that] the boys won’t lose another game for the rest of their lives.”

It could have been even more daunting for the Bulldogs defenders as the initial plan was for the two-time Coleman Medal runner-up, to pull on the Wolves jumper.

“Our original plan was to get him to play too.”

“[But] he has got a crook knee, and he also said he’d kick 20, and didn’t want to cause a young up-and-comer sleepless nights going forward!”

Capper made his name with his high-flying marks. His ‘Mark of the Year’ in 1987 showcased his prolific marking ability, which tormented defenders all around the AFL.

Since retiring, ‘The Wiz’ has made just as much of a name for himself off the field as he did on it. He is a singer, actor, commentator, socialite, and has even more recently, he released his own wine label.

After the match, Capper will host the ‘Capper Cabana’ night for the Wolves.

Capper will be entertaining the crowd with some of his smash hit songs, but there is also a way for his legions of fans to get involved as well.

“The club is looking to set the world record for ‘Most Warwick Cappers in one place’ as everyone coming, has been encouraged to dress as the great man,” Rawle said.

Manly-Warringah currently sits in seventh position in Division Two, and a win over the second-placed Bulldogs will go a long way to ensuring a finals berth.

If you want to see Warwick Capper in the flesh, make sure you get down to Weldon Oval at 2.30pm on Saturday, 24 June 2017.
