Magpies and Demons all set for annual ANZAC Day clash at Picken Oval

Written by Nick Miller (President Inner West Magpies)

Anzac Day is one of the most important days of the year in Australia. It commemorates the sacrifices Australian servicemen and women have made for our country and pays respect to all those who have served and continue to serve.

This year marks the centenary of the RAAF 1921-2021. The annual Anzac Day ceremony at Picken Oval, run by Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club and Magpie Sports, will focus on this, as well as having a pipe band, youth band and bugler.

There is a strong tradition of AFL games on Anzac Day – notably Collingwood playing Essendon at the MCG since 1995 – when the game was a draw in front of a crowd of 94,825.

ANZAC Day at Picken Oval has become a key event on the AFL Sydney calendar. Men’s Premier Division games have been played since 2007 – first with Inner West Magpies against Balmain and from 2014 against Pennant Hills Demons.

Pennant Hills were the winners from 2014-18 with Inner West Magpies claiming the Anzac Day Cup in 2019. There was no game in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 will be the first time that a Women’s Premier Division game will be played on Anzac Day at Picken Oval.

For both the women’s and men’s games medals will be awarded for the best on ground for each team.

Anzac Day at Picken Oval 25 April 2021 schedule:

  • 10.00 am Women’s Premier Division: Inner West Magpies vs Pennant Hills Demons
  • 12.40 pm Anzac Day Service
