Boy, Oh Boy Wowee of the Month – Round 1 to 4

ROUND 1 to 4 WINNER

Over the first four rounds of the 2021 season we have already seen three draws, but none more epic than this month’s Boy, Oh Boy Wowee winner!

In Round Two, Sydney University hosted the Inner West Magpies at Sydney Uni No 1 Oval for the 14th running of the Peter Ramus Cup. An important match-up on the calendar for both clubs as they play in honor of the late Peter Ramus, a Sydney University stalwart and Western Suburbs junior official. Every year each club brings their best with the hope of holding up the Cup at the end of the day.

This year was no different as both clubs came out hungry for the win resulting in plenty of lead changes across the game. Sydney University exploded out of the gates, kicking 3 goals in the opening term to be up by 20 points at the end of the quarter. It was a tale of two ends with Inner West coming back in the second, slotting 4 goals and bringing the deficit back to within 3 points at the long break. Inner West built on their second quarter momentum and made the most of their chances at goal to take the lead and extend it to 8 points by the end of the third quarter.

With the game in the balance going into the final term, the chase was on for Sydney Uni. It wasn’t the prettiest day in front of the goals for the Students as they saw 13 attempts sail through for a behind. Every time Sydney Uni did manage to score a goal, Inner West would hit back with a goal of their own to hold their lead. This back and forth would continue throughout the fourth quarter with Sydney University relentless in their pursuit of the win. It all came down to the finals seconds of the match where the Magpies found themselves desperately holding onto a 6 point lead and praying for the final siren to sound. Then this happened…..

That’s right, Sydney University came through in the clutch to take a mark inside their forward 50, seconds before the final siren sounds, and manage to slot the tough angle goal to draw the game. A devastating blow for the Inner West Magpies who almost knocked off the reigning Premiers to take home the Cup. Instead the teams came away sharing premiership points and the Peter Ramus Cup (see picture below).

A moment you’d think Inner West would rather forget, it was a surprise when AFL Sydney received the nomination from them just days after the match. The Magpies may not have won the match, but they have won the Boy, Oh Boy Wowee of the month and a handy $100 to go with it.
