Pocket Profile- Lloyd Perris (Coach, North Shore)

Get to know North Shore Bomber’s Men’s Premier Division Coach, Lloyd Perris!

Name: Lloyd Perris
AFL Sydney Club: North Shore
Grade Coached: Men’s Premier Division
How long have you been coaching for?
5 years.
What drove you to become a coach?
I had too many ACL reconstructions and had to stop playing at age 21. I was initially hesitant to get into coaching but it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made, I love helping people to get the most out of themselves.
Favourite AFL Sydney coaching moment, why?
It’s only been a brief AFL Sydney coaching career so far, but our come from behind win over UNSW in Round 4 this year was an important one for us as a group.

A special moment every week is having a beer in the rooms after a win, having a laugh with players and staff who are all committed to the same cause.

Is there an AFL Coach you model your coaching style off? If yes, why?
Stewy Dew is a measured coach who is very personable and drives high standards. Tadhg Kennelly is no longer at the Swans but he was a great role model to have, he’s a brilliant teacher and a passionate leader.
Do you have any pre-game coaching superstitions/ routines?
A morning run to clear the head.

At away games I try that club’s burger – The Eagle Burger at East Coast is a winner. They’re clearly proud of it, it’s well marketed, great fillings and the service is always good. Respect.

What is one piece of advice you would give to young, up and coming coaches?
Find your own coaching style that is authentic to your personality/character. Be honest and ask questions.
Player most likely to:
Turn up late Those with jobs, so most of them.
First on the Massage Table Jake Veale
Forget their boots Nick Hill
Kick into the man on the mark Rory Barkley
Play on from a set shot directly in front Ned Campbell
Attempt a miracle goal instead of kicking to the top of the goal square Ben Cunningham
Become a coach Jordy Law
Who is the biggest character in your team? Nic Hurrell
Who is your tip for the 2021 AFL Premiership and to win the Brownlow?
I think the Western Bulldogs will win the Premiership and Christian Petracca will win the Brownlow. I’d like to see Touk Miller get plenty of votes – he has had an incredible year.
What are you missing most about footy during lockdown?
A lot – I’ve missed being on a journey with a group of players and staff, constantly trying to grow and improve.

I’ve also missed the social aspect of football more than I thought I would. I think it’s a big reason why people are involved in community footy. I miss regularly seeing the people that I care about.

What TV show is getting you through lockdown?
Seinfeld. Same as last lockdown.
Interests outside of footy?
Running, music, beer. Generally in that order.
Usual coffee order?
¾ Long Black.
What does this coach bring to your club?
Lloyd brings a rare combination of footy IQ and character. Despite some players within the squad being his senior, he immediately won the respect of the group through his composure and intelligence. It can be a fine line to walk being so close to the playing group but Lloyd has done so to perfection.
Quote from a player about this coach:
“Lloyd is the best coach I’ve ever played under. His ability to read the game and articulate clearly is second to none.”
