2022 AFL Sydney Platinum Division Fixtures Released

Thirty-six days until AFL Sydney Platinum Division starts for season 2022, and what a competition we have in store after plenty of change within the Platinum Division ranks in the off-season.

Camden Cats (0-10 in Premier Division 2021) after four seasons in Premier Division, have moved into Platinum Division and will no doubt be a force in their new competition. In another big change to Platinum, the South West Sydney Magpies (2-8) and the Campbelltown Blues (1-9) have made the decision to merge their clubs, forging their incredible histories as one to become the South West Sydney Blues. The ‘Blues’ are no strangers to working closely, with the two clubs previously aligning in the Under 19’s Division Two competition.

With the addition of the Camden Cats and the merged entity of the South West Sydney Blues, perennial powerhouses such as Southern Power (9-1), Penrith Rams (8-2) and Macquarie University (5-5) will have their work cut out for them this season. The Parramatta Goannas (7-3), fresh off a much-improved season (and some impressive recruiting) will also be eyeing off a finals spot in 2022. Not to be discounted, the Randwick City Saints (5-5) and Balmain Tigers (3-7) had their share of moments during the 2021 season when they competed and pushed the top teams. With another pre-season under their belts they will both be seeking to push up towards finals contention in season 2022.

The countdown is on to Platinum footy in 2022 and AFL Sydney are pleased to release the fixture.

Platinum Fixture Snapshot:

And we are into it! Round 1 sees a huge match up between Southern Power and the Penrith Rams at Waratah Oval. While we must not jump too quickly to elevate competition favourites, the winner of this match may well lay claim to such a title. Both clubs have tasted Premiership success in recent years. In fact it was the Rams who bettered the Power on Grand Final Day in 2020, while the Power proved too strong for the Macquarie University Warriors in the 2019 season decider.

Next up, the newcomers to Platinum footy the Camden Cats welcome the Macquarie University Warriors to the outstanding complex at Fairfax Reserve, which has just been confirmed as receiving funding support for upgraded lights. No doubt night football will be on the cards for the Cats in seasons to come. The Camden Cats will be seeking to stamp their mark on the competition in 2022, and with a couple of tough seasons in the rear vision mirror it is nothing but up for the Cats. Macquarie University Warriors by their own incredibly high standards had a disappointing season in 2021 and will also be looking to bounce back and won’t be a push over for anyone this season, Camden included.

In the two remaining matches in Round 1, the other ‘newcomers’ the South West Sydney Blues will start their season (and history as a club) at home against the Randwick City Saints. Both clubs will be keen to start the season 1-0 against a team who they may well be competing for a finals sport against come the later rounds in August. And finally, to round out the first Saturday of the Platinum season the Parramatta Goannas return to Gipps Road Oval to tackle the Balmain Tigers. The Goannas have proven they can play some very competitive footy against the top teams in Platinum and will be hoping for a winning start to the season. However, whenever you play the Tigers it’s never an easy contest and this matchup will likely prove no different.
