Western Magic continue Indigenous celebrations

The Western Magic Football Club will continue the celebration of Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round with specially designed Indigenous guernseys this weekend.

Much like the GWS GIANTS and Port Adelaide, the Magic opted to bring Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round into a second week, to ensure they were able to celebrate at their home venues.

The club, which now boasts four teams in the Sydney AFL leagues, will mark the round with jerseys designed by Luke Penrith.

Not only was Penrith the Western Magic’s inaugural Best and Fairest winner, but he also designed the first GWS GIANTS Indigenous guernsey in 2014. Penrith also designed the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round boots for various players across the AFL last week, including Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin.

All four Western Magic teams will be wearing the jerseys, which has been inspired from previous jersey designs and the three Aboriginal clans that surround the Blacktown area.

The Gomerigal (South Creek), Wawarawarry (Eastern Creek) and Warmuli (Prospect) clans have had an important influence on not only the Indigenous jersey’s, but the culture within the Magic Football Club.

Joey Saunders, one of the club’s Division One players, is proud of the effort the club has put into to celebrate Indigenous culture.

“This round brings everyone together as one,” Saunders said.

“It gives everyone that chance to be proud of an amazingly ancient culture.

“The colours that we wear always represent our respect for Indigenous culture and [we] wear it with pride and respect.

“Our jumpers come from our club motto – “Four team’s one club” – and just outside the middle of the jumper are four family gathering places.

“The middle is us coming together for our footy games, this also can be a special gathering place, and a family coming together”.

The Magic will come together for a ‘Super Saturday of Football’ this weekend, with all four of their teams playing at Blacktown International Sportspark. It is free entry into the ground to encourage people to come and enjoy a day of football and Indigenous celebration.

The Magic’s Reserve Grade side will kick-off at 9am against South West Magpies, with the Women’s clash following at 11am. The Under 19s will play at 1pm, and the day concludes with the Division One match against Sydney University.
