Get to know Sydney University Women’s Player, Evangeline Douglas!

Name: Evangeline Douglas
Nickname: Evie or Skip
AFL Sydney Club: Sydney University Bombers
Position/s: Midfield
Playing Number: 11
Usual Grade: Women’s Division 4
First season of AFL Sydney footy: 2020
Why did you start playing footy?
I started playing with Sydney Uni after my housemate (and now prems player) Lauren Maneschi told me to come along to a training when she realised I was footy mad. I played a little bit in school back in WA and was itching to find a club in Sydney to reap all the rewards that come with a team sport.
What is your most memorable AFL Sydney moment?
Our very conclusive 101 point win over Wollondilly at home under lights. We’d just come off our only defeat of the season in which we went down by a single point. This huge win was wind in our sails and to do it at home, in ‘prime time’ with oval 1 teaming with Sydney Uni players and supporters was pretty special. The new scoreboard got an absolute workout and some stars within the team really started to shine. It was electric.
What is the best part about playing at your current club?
Sydney Uni is such a welcoming club, there really is a place for everyone. I’m really proud of what we’ve built in the new division 4 team. I couldn’t imagine a more supportive, united and fun team in the competition. We’re full of girls who give one-percenters that get us over the line. We might not be the home of the biggest boots or the most spectacular marks but we’re built from the ground up in tackles, talk, chases and genuine respect for our team mates, and its resulted in a winning mentality. We play for each other first and foremost, and in that we make ourselves proud.
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or routines?
Plenty of caffeine, peanut butter toast with banana and a perfect ponytail.
What is the best advice you have received as a player and from who?
Probably the staple James Lees whiteboard mantra of “play for your mates”. Hard to not put in an effort you’re proud of if you give your all for your teammates.
Who has the best kick at the club?
Chompy, it’s massive. Big fan of the Amy O’Reilly wind-up kick too.
What is one AFL rule you would change and why?
The standing on the mark rule, it’s an absolute tragedy we miss out on the tomfoolery of a classic put-off.
What are you missing most about footy during lockdown?
Everything. To have the season paused half-way through with Div 4 sitting second on the ladder is a heartbreaker, I want nothing more than to be back out there with the girls playing for the cup that I know we deserve. Mostly I miss my teammates, they are a remarkable group and the love we have for each other is rare. Footy always was the highlight of my week.
Interests outside of football?
My beloved Fremantle Dockers, my book collection, my plants, live music, good food and Seth Rogen’s Instagram page.
Which teammate is most likely to:
Turn up late Theo and Leni
Be on the massage table Lexi Eaves
Forget their boots Maddy Greentree
Suck up to the coach Masina Nelson
Appear on the next season of Australian Survivor Zoe Downing
Who is your tip to win the 2021 AFL Premiership & Brownlow Medal?
Western Bulldogs are looking 2016 hot, I think they’ll win the premiership. Can we give David Mundy a Brownlow already!? The man is an absolute workhorse who just gets better with age.
Who would you like to see as the Pre-Game entertainment for the 2021 AFL Grand Final?
Why Cold Chisel don’t have a contract for the next 20 years I do not know.
What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
Troye Sivan’s house. Trust me, google it.
First place you want to visit after travel restrictions lift?
Home to Perth, it’s been a long two years, then straight to Optus Stadium for a Sunday arvo Dockers slaughtering.
What is the one superpower you wish you had and why?
Being an early-riser, super human as far as I’m concerned.
Apple Music or Spotify?
Spotify. Particularly Rich Hawtin’s playlists.
Pineapple on Pizza. Yes/ No?
Not for me personally, but if it makes you happy it can’t be that bad.
Usual coffee order?
Strong oat latte (previously a long mac topped up but that doesn’t exist this side of the Nullarbor).
